“Snow Flake”

Day 100 of 366 Day Project

“Magic is everywhere, explore & be amazed everyday!”

Meet ‘Snow Flake’ my first born grand daughters favourite pet chicken, she’s an ISA Brown.

Keeping a flock of chickens is the perfect way to give your child a pet and a few life lessons as well.

Did you know that Australia’s Dr Chris Brown has a pet chicken? Her name is Juliet, and she is an ISA Brown.

If you have an average sized backyard, you’ve got enough space to keep some chooks. Three to five pullets are all you need to keep a small family in a regular supply of eggs. Great for the kids, a few chooks can also be enormous fun and the kids get to learn a bit about handling animals and responsible care.

I know my granddaughter Lucy loves to feed her chooks. When she goes out to the pen to empty the chooks scrap bucket her mum said it’s not uncommon for Lucy to disappear for 30 minutes or more. She loves to hang out with them and collect the eggs. She’s mastered the art of carrying lots of eggs. On this visit she came into the kitchen with 8 eggs, all intact, two up each sleeve and the other four wrapped up in the front of her jumper. Lucy takes pride in being an experienced egg collector, it’s lovely to watch.  Even as young as a toddler, she’d eagerly pick up the chooks and carry them around the backyard…a real chook whisperer.
