“Shadows”

Day 48 of 366 Day Project

“Magic is everywhere, explore & be amazed everyday!”

I just had to share this photo for today. Kodie our four legged fur friend was spooked by the ‘scary thing’ following her on the beach…little did she know it was her own shadow…priceless moment.

“Never fear shadows. They simply mean there’s a light shining somewhere nearby.” ~ Ruth E.Renkel

What are shadows and what causes them? Outside, people make shadows when they block light from the sun. Think about what happens when the sun is behind you. Your body blocks some of the sun’s light, causing a shadow to form in front of you. The shadow takes on the shape of your body.

So how are shadows formed? Sunlight, or all light for that matter, travels in waves and if something blocks the path of these waves a shadow will be formed. The sun will give objects the longest shadow at the beginning and end of the day, because that is when the sun is lowest in the sky.

If you ever made shadow puppets with your hand as a kid, you know how hard it can be to make anything besides a bunny look the way it’s supposed to. You also you know how easy it is to create great shadows accidentally, like the way you held the ball in gym class made you look like you had enormous boobs. Yep, all these years later, it’s still funny.

Click here to view more of the 38 photos that contain shadows, both accidental and intentional, that tell an entirely different story than the photos themselves. Some of them are pretty impressive – #35 is effortlessly hilarious, but would be totally impossible to recreate if you tried.
